Yes. A number of after market alarm companies made them. This is
commonly referred to as pager. However it is my impression the alarm
market has fallen on the wayside probably due to the significant
increase of OE alarm.
Of all alarms I like Alpine from about 10 years ago the most. At that
time they have good modular and cross system design. I have one in my
Miata. When the alarm is tripped the pager-like receiver will beep. The
range is good enough if you are not too far from your vehicle. Like all
radio wave it does not penetrate concrete walls well.
It is useful for a Vanagon when you are camping and walk off out of
sight of your vehicle in the woods.

I was wondering if there is an alarm system that would send you a
warning when your car is being messed around, opened, shaken by a bigger
hit or the likes. I have hear of one like this many years ago, but have
not ever since. I remember a guy running out of the movie theater and
catching the thieves red handed. I think, our vans, especially the
Westfalias when loaded with all the goodies, are sitting ducks for
thieves in shopping, movie or work parking lots. Those thieves that are
following you with a cell phone to keep their partners informed about
your position, are also possible to beat this way when you call the
police in the same time and surprise the active thief in your van. I
can imagine a call to your cell phone from your car by an automatic call
when the system is activated.
Any of you know of a device like this? Tourists would really appreciate
this kind of thing when they are visiting a place far from home and the
van is loaded with their stuff and being the only transportation, would
make it a great loss.
I have the feeling that there is a thing like this, probably even
somewhere in Europe. I have heard of one in South Africa. But I think,
it would be an insult to think that the Africans can do it and here the
guys would have to import it from there. Zoltan
