You can eleminate that popping open if you'll slide the door closed (dont
rocket slam it) onto the front latch then go to the rear edge of the door
and press in on the door at the latch assembly location until you hear it
latch properly.
This procedure will save your exterior sliding door handle and your elbow
too.
