That is scary! I had a 78 type II with one from the factory. The vehicle had very low milage and it ran flawlessly. VW had it wired to a wind-up 15 minute timer for safety reasons. This thing put out a lot of heat and the temperature is much higher than propane furnace.

I drove thru the Windy City one cold and windy winter night and the great northwestly almost pick up the front end and dump it in the adjacent lane. I was tire and sleepy so I decide to pull over and sleep for the night. Over the course of the night I have to craw out of the blanket into the freezing air to crank the timer many times when the cabin got so cold.

I am unaware of if there are units intended to be used as overnight comfort heater.

Eberspacher makes a series of diesel furnace for marine use but the smallest one are a bit too big for the Vanagon/bus. It will be a good choice if you have a diesel Vanagon though.

For peace of mind a good vented propane furnace like the Carver or Propex are the way to go though.

Jim, I purchased one of these many moons ago. I hooked it up in the back yard to test it. The unit worked well until I turned it off. I heard a load "PHOOM!" and the whole thing went up in flames. 8-0
