Those on the Diesel-Vanagon list know the whole sordid story. Here's
the Cliff's Notes:

Late June: install new Overland 1.9 into the Orphan.
Late June-mid July: drive to and from work. 35 mile daily commute. 700
miles total.
Mid July: drive from Union, OR to John Day for SolWest.  100 miles each
way.  Over two 6k ft summits.  Works v. well.  Into third about 4
times.  Temp gauge to about 3/4. GREAT engine for the Vanagon Westy.
7 miles outside of Baker City running at 55 on the flat, glance down
and see temp gauge pegged and red light flashing. Immediately kill
engine and pull to shoulder.

HOT motor.  cold radiator.  Guess what's wrong.  Pull thermostat and
refill.  We got bubbles. Oh well.  That I can fix. Here's the real
problem though... Overtemp/overpressure put a couple 1/2" long cracks
in the NLA, 2 year only header tank.  I tried the JB Weld patch.  Still
leaking.  Next step, I'm gonna try welding it.  I'd feel a LOT more
secure about applying plastic melting heat to this piece of unobtainium
if I had a good one.

So please... If you're wandering through the local boneyard and you
come across a diesel Vanagon that's been picked over, PLEASE peek and
see if the header tank is there.  If it is, please pick it up and let
me know.
