Mike,

You are almost there. The lazy Susan thingy is asymmetrical. To gain access the two inner screws, you have to slide the passenger seat all the way back, then rotate the seat 180 degrees around. Once the cover is off, the battery will just bare have enough room to be lifted out of the opening.

If you don't have a battery carrying strap, you can use a pair of vice grips one at each terminal. Be very carefully that you don't accidently short the vice grip on the positive side to any metal or else you have a arc welder.

I went to access the main battery under the passenger seat on my 84 Westy today. The Owner's Manual tells me to slide the seat forward all the way. When I do so, I find I can remove the bit of carpet that is folded over the rear portion of the seat pedestal. I find a black metal cover plate with four Philips screws. The two rearmost screws are easily removed. However, the foremost two are well-covered by the lower portion of the seat's "lazy susan" thingy. There's no way to access the screw heads.

So I'm sitting here, looking at this and wondering if I am too simple to be allowed to drive or something?
