The problem is... the oil that's in the engine has probably already accumulated on the bottom of the cylinders. I've taken apart dozens of motors that have sat for years, and most still had oil on the bottom of the cylinders and rust on the tops.

BTW: Squirting oil in the cylinders of a horizontal engine isn't terribly effective, however, it doesn't hurt either.

But it would at least lubricate the bottom of the cylinders where most friction presumably occurs...would it not?

I'm curious about this as I have 1200cc VW industrial engine I intend to revive and it has not started for quite some years now....first I gotta replace the exhaust however as it's rusting away...
