Subject: a Hall Control Unit story
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

hello everyone! I was on the list last summer and y'all helped me tremendously. I have a few new things to work on, but before I ask for your help (and have the time to read all this stuff) I'll contribute a few things I've learned from the four years I've owned an '84 Westy.

The first year I had it I would experience this strange phonomena occasionally when I hit a bump, I could tell the engine just momentarily stopped, like perhaps the fuel was cut off briefly. It was strange, but I was too new to VW ownership to figure it out. And I probably never would have, until the day I hit a bump and the motor completely quit. I started checking everything I could think of, and eventually got around to checking wire connections. I had forgotten that I had left the key in the "ON" position, and when I happened to wiggle the 7-wire connector going into the Hall Control Unit, the motor turned over! After some fiddling and the arrival of a helper, I determined that everything worked fine if I held the connector in the just exactly perfect place - one of the wires had broken, inside the 90 degree bend of the connector. Luckily for me, I had another 84 as a parts bus, so the fix was simple; cut the seven wires and splice them into another connector. This has worked fine ever since. I would think this particular problem would be extremely rare, but maybe it will help someone diagnos a motor that won't run for no seeming reason someday.

And for a similar story, see my next post "A fuel pump relay story"
