I guess I'll reply to this one as well (bored today) I can agree that with all of the problems I have had, (no room here to list them!) I have always been able to "limp" my vw's to the next town, repair shop etc. and often have been able to make the repair myself My old dodge van would just quit and that was it - AAA towing time.

Its kind of like a vw may not always run well, but it always runs (81 jetta was the same way) Other cars seem to run fine or not at all!
