The Camper supplement to my 1983 Volkswagen Vanagon Owner's Manual calls it the "cornice" and suggests it "can be used to store small items." Robert Bentley perhaps has his own pet name for it. We call ours the gutter, and use it for flashlights, batteries, and stove lighter, but not spices. Everyone knows your spices belong under the front seats, along with your spare anti-freeze.
