You question is not stupid, 98% of all engine have timming belt, and yes, it is a critical part to replace at 60-70k miles. Vanagon have 4 possible OEM Engine (+ subi and I4....that HAVE timming belt"S"), one of them as a Timming Belt (Diesel), so the next time, put year and type of engine before you post. Some mechanics will try to rob you, that the way it is...
