Entity Kenneth Wilford spoke thus: > Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 1. Open the plastic plug over the timing inspection hole in the tranny bell housing (if the plug is not already missing). 2. With the tranny in neutral put a wrench on the crank pulley bolt. Slowly rotate engine clockwise until the timing mark notch is exactly centered in the inspection hole. Use a flashlight if needed. 3. Remove the bolt from the center of the injection pump output housing. 4. Thread in the dial indicator and make sure it is now pointing near the middle of its operating range. i.e. about 2 to 3mm 5. Slowly turn the engine backwards while watching the dial gauge needle. It should be winding down at first but after it stops moving stop turning the engine. Make sure that the dial indicator is still in its working range. i.e. not at zero. It does not matter what it reads as long as it is not at the end of its range. 6. Make note of the dial reading. Set the outer pointer to "zero" if the dial has one. 7. Slowly turn the engine forward until the timing mark is again exactly centered in the bell housing hole. The dial indicator should have started to move at some point and when the bell housing timing marks are aligned take a reading of the dial indicator. The amount it has INCREASED is the measurement, .88mm is stock for Vanagons. (between .83 and .93 is likely close enough) If it is .88mm or pretty close, you are done. Otherwise, loosen the 4 injection pump mounting bolts and turn the pump slightly while watching the dial indicator. Move the pump so that the dial now reads .88 or whatever it would need to read to indicate same. Check the measurement again using the whole procedure. Once the reading looks good, tighten the pump mounting bolts and check the whole thing again. -- Gnarlie http://Gnarlodious.com/Vanagon/Vanagon.html |
