Like someone else mentioned, bears (at least the black bears common in the sierras) generally won't bother an occupied tent/vehicle in search of food. We recently took our westy and stayed at the Tuolumne Meadows campground (Yosemite). The brochure we were given added the following: "Hard sided recreational vehicles may store food inside, provided it is not visible or odoriferous from the outside and all doors and windows are closed when unattended."
