In defense of the shop... It's obvious to all of us with Vanagon-induced knuckle scars that there's no timing belt in there... but if you have some automotive knowledge and hear "1980-something 4-cylinder engine", I can forgive you for thinking "timing belt". On every other VW 4-banger of that vintage, you'll find one. I didn't know that VW ever produced a waterboxer until I went Westie-shopping, I naively expected them to be inline-4 powered.
