Alan, I'm not familiar with the Kirkwood Lake area, but if you are, try calling ahead and asking the same questions you're asking here. If there's a USFS office, certainly ask there first. But then also ask at any camp store, horse packer or other nearby business where there are people who know the area and the current conditions. If you spot some old timers that obviously spend a lot of time there, ask them. Sometimes this information is more candid than what you'll get from rangers, at least the desk types. Be aware that conditions can vary from time to time depending on which bears are operating in the area at the time. The rangers & locals often get to know the bears by sight and know which ones are trouble. Enjoy the trip and let us know how you make out! Wish I could go, too. sigh ... //Jack |
