If the damage is more extensive on one side of the rotor than the other, there is a problem with your calipers. If, "... only a very small area is touching the pad." there is definitely a problem with the calipers. I do not have a Bentley that covers Syncros, but I'll assume that it uses a two piston design like the 2wd Vanagon does. If so, I'd jack up the the corner that's causing "issues", remove the road wheel, the pad retaining pins and the anti-squeal spring. I'd then have my sweetie step on the brakes. Then I'd try to insert a .001 or .002 feeler gauge between each pad and the rotor. If it will go in, that indicates a caliper that has a frozen piston. That is the ONLY thing that will cause the symptoms you are describing. The wear pattern on the rotor is telling you that you have caliper problems, not that you have defective rotors.
