Hmmm.. I don't know how far into Maine you are going, but if you get far enough along the coast:

- Boothbay Harbor - Heavy tourist traffic here, so if you don't mind crowds, this may be a good spot. There's a couple that built a schooner in their yard, sailed it around the world, and now take guests out for a harbor sail from Boothbay. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the boat, it was a great way to see the harbor. Wind power rules!

- Pemaquid Point is just north of Boothbay Harbor, and my favorite slice of Maine. TO get there, hang a 'south" at Damariscotta). This has far fewer tourists (most get sucked into Boothbay Harbor before they get this far). At the very tip is Pemaquid Point Light... *very* nice location, rocky shore, lighthouse on a promontory, pine trees (and the inevitable seaside restaurant and gift shop). It's a perfect quiet location to see the sunset, you'll want a camera!

Between the mainland and the light, the town of New Harbor offers Shaw's Seafood Restaurant... informal dining, freshest possible seafood (they share the dock with the local fishernman's co-op). Also at that same dock is the Hardy Boat Cruises, which ferries (passengers only) to Monhegan Island, and runs sunset cruises and puffin watches.

There is at least one campground on Pemaquid Point, and it looked pleasant from the road, but I haven't stayed there.

Tim
