If you are planning to use the stock wbx bellhousing with an adaptor plate to mount the diesel later on, then the 'Hi-Tork' starter will work fine. If you use the diesel bell housing later on, then you'll need a diesel Vanagon starter as the Hi-Tork won't fit.

I am now faced with the need to replace the starter on my '88 Westy, but only plan on driving it with the current 2.1L WBX for another few months before beginning a swap to a diesel engine. I plan on using the stock 50 deg mounting and bellhousing setup, and stock diesel flywheel. So... what are the differences between a stock gas vs diesel starter? Can I buy a diesel replacement starter, and use it for a few months with my WBX? What about the aftermarket hi-torque starters shown on E-Bay? They claim to work on both gas & diesel, and syncro & 2WD vans. Any enlightenment would be appreciated here...

Thanks.-- Shawn Wright
