Hi David,

here's some info I got from John Rodgers a while back- you might want to doublecheck, but I believe you have the same tranny as my 4spd 84 Westy. I haven't drained the tranny as I haven't had the vehicle run for more than a day or 2 in a row in the last 5months I've owned it (but I'm not bitter)- but I did pick up the hexhead bolt etc he describes below as it looks like it will make the job easier. "Couple of little tricks.

You will need to drain the tranny, obviously. But first things first!! Remove the FILL plug on the SIDE of the tranny FIRST!! Wouldn't it be embaressing to remove the drain plug and drain the tranny fluid only to discover you can't get the fill plug out!!! It's happened!!

The drain plugs take a 17 mm hex wrench, if I recall. Most hex wrenchs won't work because they stick out to far. You can use a bolt with a 17 mm hex head and two nuts to remove the plugs. What you do is get a short 17 mm hex bolt and thread two hex nuts on the shank of the bolt. Tighten the two nuts and jamb them together. This locks it all together and then using the Hex bolt with the head inserted into the plug, you can use a box end wrench to turn the plug out. Works really well.. Save the oil and stain it through a painters screen to check for metal. There will be some, but if you get anything more than slivers you may have a problem with the tranny. There should be no chunks of metal, only slivers which is always normal wear an tear. Don't flush the tranny. Just put the plug back in, and add your new tranny oil. MT 90 mixes well with regular hypoid gear oil so it is no problem for it to mix. Change the oil every two years."

I also found in the archives to use 80/80w/90.any preferred brand???

I can tell this one has been leaking for a while around the linkage input and the output shafts.but there is NO indication of that hex bolt being removed.rust.anyone know what size hex tool I am going to need to get that plug out????
