Most of the braking power comes from the front brakes especially on my old 84' westy partly becouse it rides so high. When i do an "Oh Shit" stomp on the brake pedal, all the weight of my heavy westy is transfered to the front wheels. Once a cat ran out in front of my van while i was doing around 35-40MPH...i hit the brakes so hard that my passenger swore that one of my rear tires came off the ground....it might have been the fact that i swung the steering wheel a little to the left while braking but i know my front brakes were working overtime. So having 4 wheel disc brakes would prolly be better suited to the newer non-westy carat vanagons that are lighter, and lower to the ground......i dunno just my 2 cent.

Oh, the cat lived Phil
