I doubt the oil pump gasket is leaking. More than likely it is your oil cooler, the crank pulley seal, or a clogged oil breather hose that is dumping oil on the engine. All three of these can be checked and repaired with the engine in the car.

The problem is that I can't quite see where it's coming from because it's hidden by the crossbeam and maybe behind the pulley wheel. In looking at the drawings of the engine in the Bentley, my best guess would be a leaking gasket on the cover plate to the oil pump. The Haynes has a nice write-up on how to remove it but talks about the engine sitting on a bench. My question is, is it possible to do this while the engine is in place? I REALLY, REALLY don't want to have to pull the engine (and everything else getting to the engine) just to replace a couple of gaskets. Has anyone one done this with the engine in place? And could my leak be something I'm overlooking? Thanks in advance.
