if your going to keep the van for several more years then think about stainless. frank will correct me if i am wrong but, i think to get a stainless muffler from him you have to by a 2.1 muffler and changed to the 2.1 aluminum engine mount bracket. thats because his stainless mufflers aren't round they are sort of square.

Well, not exactly. This is how "stories" other than the truth get started. The _STEBRO/Vanagon Stainless Steel Mufflers_ (http://members.aol.com/Fkc43/stebro.htm) are indeed square BUT are made to fit in the exact same space and the OEM mufflers for both the 1.9 and 2.1 Vanagons. The story about changing the aluminium engine carrier is so that you can use the entire 2.1 stainless steel exhaust system on the 1.9 engine as there are currently no stainless steel header pipes or j-pipes made for the 1.9 system.
