You can check CV's by getting into a smooth, level parking lot, turn the steering wheel to the stop, either left or right, and drive in a tight circle. Do it both directions. This will load the CV's and if they are badly worn, they will knock as you turn. Most likely you have a rock in the tire tread which will drop out once moving.
