I have just purchased a rebuilt power steering pump for my '88. The rebuilt unit is studded where it connects to the mounting plate. The existing pump is bolted through the mounting plate to the pump body. The existing pump manufacture date is 1992, the rebuilt pump is 1989. I am always leery of rebuilds, since you never know what production year the core comes from. When checking with a straight edge, the existing pump sheave to drive sheave has ~3/16" parallel misalignment. This axial loading is probably the cause for the whining pump in the first place. (belt not straight) Could some one look at the engine in a similar vintage van and tell me if the sequence is: stud through the pump body, nut, mounting plate, nut or, pump body, mounting plate, through bolt A picture would be great. Either way I will have to shim to get the parallel alignment correct, I guess. Regards, Mike Pedersen '88 Westy GL Automatic Powell River, BC |
