Tim, Perhaps in the early 90s that may be true.

Just bought a set of two 12 inch CCFLs today complete with the inverter for 14.95 You can buy them online for $9.99 (see my link below)

Tested them in the garage this evening, very nice white light as nice in fact brighter than standard dc flourescents.

Very low draw. claims 5 milliamps. I believe these are the best light technology for the lowest draw on the battery you can buy anywhere today.
