Unfortunately, this is one of the hardest jobs in the vanagon. With the dash removed this is a bear to get to. You can cut a hole from outside the vanagon to grease and inspect the linkage, but removal will have to be done from the inside. Plan on a week for this project. Fix other dash related problems while your in there. Try a lot of wd-40 first. ERic
