Rebuilt catalytic converters are extremely common, especially on high-end vehicles. Ever price a new cat for a Mercedes? My brother owns a shop that includes a muffler business. It is standard procedure to take the customers old catalytic converter assembly (sometimes they're quite large) to the rebuilder and have the guts replaced. Runs about $90 (wholesale) instead of $400+++.

Of course our Vanagons utilize an older, simpler, and cheaper, type of cat, so it's easier and cheaper to just nuy a new one.

Cheers,

I've never even heard of a rebuilt cat converter! We sell new ones for $95.
