More than likely, if the New Beetle is discontinued, the value of used ones will go up or even skyrocket. Look at the old Beetle Convertibles, or better yet the Syncro Vanagons.

The fallacy here is if you can buy a used car for $10,000 and save $12,413 ($22,413 - $10,000) and put that $12,413 in the bank at, let's say, 2% after taxes, ..... and if diesel costs you $2/gal and you get 50 mpg from the Beetle TDI versus 20 mpg on your 'other car'. Now, you did not tell us how many miles for your commute, but if you also budget $1,000/year for repairs to your used car.......

Or, if you are getting a car loan, just look at the difference in $ payment for a $10,000 car versus a $22,413 car, add in your estimated repairs and see what y ou have left over for buying more petrol/diesel/gas for the "less efficient' car

You can do the math.......

I'm leaving out any environmental concerns, bur remember it's "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" so it MAY! be more environmentally friendly to purchase a used car with 20 mpg than a new car at 50 mpg.

Why not purchase a used Beetle TDI or a used Jetta TDI? We just bought a pristine 1997 Jetta TDI with 45,000 kms (5 speed, sunroof, A/C, no kids, non-smokers) and we get 45 mpg (with the AC on). We know the sole PO so all is above board on this car.

Also, did I read/hear that VW is about to discontinue the Beetle????? Better check that or else you'll have an orphan car and may loose a lot in depreciation.-re-sale value. m2cw Malcolm
