Joy,

Just remember the fundamental difference between polar bears and the other North American bears. Black bears and grizzlies are omnivores... Polar bears are dedicated carnivores, so you *are* food.

I passed through that area on my 2001 road trip, I hugged the north shore of Lake Ontario from Toronto through Sudbury to Sault St Marie. If you follow that route, make sure you fill up your gas tank every chance you get! This is some fairly empty country, and I got *really* close to the bottom of my tank at one point.

I didn't see any polar bears (or moose), I dunno how far north you need to go to get into their neck of the woods (tundra?).

Enjoy the trip!

Tim
