Joy writes: I also need to replace a burnt out bulb on one of the license plate lights. Went to the local car parts place, got a bulb that fits, but it is much dimmer than the old bulb. The old one is all cruddy and we couldn't read all the part numbers on it. Does anyone know what bulb it calls for? I'm about ready to get rid of even more stuff and continue my travels in my Prius, which never needs repairs and if I needed parts I could get them. Joy

Jeff replies: Sounds like another owner out there trying to get through vanagon life without a Bentley or owners manual. Parts can be found anywhere online if you know where to look and what you are looking for and they can be in your hands the next day if you pay the shipper man. I admire your tenacity with vanagon travel and wish you luck. Please get a manual, preferably a Bentley and you will answer many of your own questions without the wait and enhance the joy of the vanagon experience through self discovery. The license plate lights can use 5 watt to 8 watt bulbs safely. As for the '89 headlights, they have no detachable lens, only a sealed unit with replaceable bulb...about $50-70 each used or triple that for nice e-code upgrades. Don't bother with new DOT square headlamps from dealer or otherwise as they exhibit poor pattern and too costly compared to the e-code upgrades. P-mail if you need parts sources. Fuel pumps; covered in the archives for years...wouldn't hurt to have one as a spare or until yours goes. They can and do last for years after the whine begins. Pumps are pricey and can be in your hand the next day if you need it while on the road.

The Prius will eventually need something and parts or service in Bradleyville, MO would not be available.
