Agreed. but it is done with some regularity nowadays. Why? Thrills. Was the first person who strapped on skis for a steep downhill run viewed as any less insane? After all, same progression of extreme drop and slope.

Another insanity relating to kayaking: City of Dallas, Texas has built an artificial kayak "park and play" facility in the highly polluted Trinity River in its downtown portion. They built a steep run with engineered hydraulics, confined by concrete walls. The hydraulics create a standing wave below the rapid that a kayaker can set up in to do tricks.

Nearby is a sign posted by the Texas Department of Health warning against water body contact due to infectious, water borne disease. The warning has been current throughout the construction phase, and was when construction was proposed. But people use it.
