Maybe. Myself, I'd like to KNOW that I can do it, even if I choose not to (most of the time!). But where power & torque really are most important is on the open road when overtaking... the less time you spend on the wrong side of the road, the safer you are (in any given overtaking maneuver).

Also Dunedin, where I live, is extremely hilly, and these hills are steep and long. Screaming the engine in second uphill on the way home from work every weekday isn't going to be a good recipe for longevity.
