We also have both a Vanagon (not a Westy) that we use for camping, as well as a Class C motorhome. We use the motorhome for close to home camping, due to only getting about 7-8 mpg vs the Vanagon's about 20 mpg. The motorhome is a 95 Tioga, 31 feet, which we purchased two years ago with only 18,000 miles on it for $22,000. Considering some people want that much (and more!!) for a 89-91 Westy, the motorhome makes a lot of sense, but the mpg is a real drag. There is a lot more space, etc. with the motorhome, which really helps in the winter time when you're confined inside a lot more - especially with kids. We're heading up north to Seattle soon and are probably going to take the Vanagon (and hopefully it won't give us any problems), since it would cost about $400 just for fuel on the motorhome. It would make sense to take the motorhome if we were going to stay on the road a month or so, but for a week or two it just doesn't justify driving that distance.
