If you install grease fittings into the rear axle housing you need to install some type of vent so the heated grease will not expand and blow your seals outward. I think the key is to thread the housing, install the grease and then install a vent fitting (A little gravity flow valve type fitting as a vent).

Busdepot has rearbearing kits for $40.00. I guess I feel inclined to leave a sealed bearing alone until it starts making noise or feels funny when I check the brakes. Different story with the axels. Bearings run cooler than the axels. Axels need to be greased every 50k. gary http://www.busdepot.com/busdepot/view.jsp?model=43&category=2&group=50&prodg roup=834 Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2004 23:28:31 -0500 From: ". ." <rrecardo@WEBTV.NET> Subject: hello and a new memeber.

I have been reading the vanagon.com archves for some time and heve not found any answer's to a question I have. I would like to remove the rear stub axles and service the rear bearings. I am finding out that a regular service schedule on the rear axle bearings will be an unpleasant task. The stub axle will have to be removed along with other items. Not a savory task. I had in my mind to drill and install a grease fitting into the stub axle so at least once a year I could give the bearings a bit of high temperature, no washout, heavy duty grease just to make sure that they are properly lubricated. Does anyone out in the list see any problems with this modification the rear axles?

Thank You, R. Recardo
