Hi Everyone, Well, I had planned to do this over the long weekend, but catching some sort of bug at the DMB concert put a dent in that, so I did the work yesterday/today (with some finish up work tomorrow). I had several things to fix behind the dash, not the least of which was the heat always on problem. I also needed to put in a new instrument cluster and speedo cable, and clean up some of the ad hoc wiring the PO and myself have done. Luckily there's a FLAPS across the street from me for everything I didn't think of beforehand. After getting the dash and heater core removed and seeing all the space in there, I decided not to fix the heat and just leave it out. I may regret that this winter, but I can always put it back in if I decide I need it that badly (I like cold, though). My '84 now sports an '85 instrument cluster with tach courtesy of Doug in CT, no heater, a properly wired stereo, and an auxiliary power system that will truly be auxiliary when I get the second battery hooked up. :) Pics of yesterday's and today's work can be found at: http://darkstar.frop.org/vanagon/dash.html Tomorrow I get to finish everything up (gotta hook up the tach wire to the coil and yank the heater hoses, plus figure out what I did wrong with the 14 pin connector) and take it for the test drive. Then Thursday it's into the shop to have the timing adjusted and brakes bled so I'm ready for camping this weekend. By the by, if anyone has any suggestions on why the dash lights only come on when the ignition is off, and the high beam indicator comes on when they're off and turns off when they're on, I'd love to hear them. It'd sure beat tracing each wire in the 14 pin connector to the source. -Zach |
