I'd rather not have to pick the bugs out of my bike components and off the frame--carrying bikes that way in Iowa this time of the year would be very bad for any bike you cared anything about. Insects on the bikes on my Passat roof rack is problematic enough. Our city transit busses have this sort of arrangement for carrying two bikes (the bike rack folds down when needed with a lock bar engaged by the user)--it's great for just around town at low speeds.
