The customs/immigration guys can be kind of scary when they get on their power trips. The borders/ports of entry used to be the only places in the USA where you lost all your rights (e.g., the right to remain silent, the right to representation, etc.). Cheers, Jeff

I cross the U.S./Canada border a lot. The formula is terribly predictable given 4 different situations: 1) wife and i in the honda civic = no hassles straight on through 2) myself in the honda = more questions but not hassles, straight on through 3) wife and i in the van = some questions, little hassle, usually straight on through 4) just myself in the van = get stopped almost every time. This formula is about 98% accurate. I just laugh when they search the van now, because it is so absurd. Now, i just need to start putting signs in cabinets or something to give them something to look for. Little bags of oregano. Candy bars. Stuffed pigs... any other ideas that wouldn't get me detained at the border? Maybe i could get several little beepers i could turn on remotely in different parts of the van so i could get them on a beeper hunt... Sorry... i get kind of dismayed with the general power tripping of customs officers. -Damon
