My brother in law (copied on this email) lives outside of Ithaca, around three hours from Rochester. He has an '82 vanagon. There's also a Finger Lakes VW club which organizes Westies at Watkins, which is coming up in a couple of weeks, in Watkins Glen NY. If you do a google search for FLWVC or for Westies at Watkins, you should be able to track down lots of company for your Vanagon when you get there.

That being said - I do know that my brother-in-law is rather envious of my rust-free van! Not necessarily a good sign...
