check to see if your injectors are flooding out the spark, this was my trouble and it turned out to be ECU. BTW this took like a week for me to find after checking, air,spark,gas. you name it. * grounds? clean? temp sensors?

according to the Bentley (and my own 85 Vanagon), it does indeed have a hall sensor and generator.
