I'd suggest that you use a piece of piano wire with a couple of T handles. Like a garrote (not sure of the word). At any rate you can draw the wire under the plate and with straight or sawing motion it should separate from the van. Remove the wire and inspect it to be sure you're not cutting into the finish before you make the full pass.
