Subject: Re: Exhaust Pipe Question
Content-Type: text/plain;charset=iso-8859-1

----------------------------- I have an 87' Vanagon Westfalia and the exhaust pipes are looking pretty rusty. I just got done with a cross-country drive and you can hear there is some sort of exhaust leak. I think it is probably time for new pipes & a muffler. One option is to buy the complete kit for $469 and have it installed. Is this the best route to go or can I get a shop to bend exhaust pipes to spec for me? My guess is this would save some money, I wanted to see if anyone had gone down this route. Rich --------------reply--------- Rich; After just having this done I can tell you to buy the best pipes you can find(stainless(DANSK)) I DIDN'T do this and now regret it because most of the time and lots of money is in the removal of the exhaust bolts or studs. The guy who removed mine (Meyer Import repair) has worked on vanagons, buses and bugs for years and did the job with no complaints, hesitation or fear---other muffler shops will roll their eyes or outright refuse to work on your exhaust. If you dont get stainless, at least get your new pipes ceramic coated so that for years to come, you can enjoy looking at your $800 expense as you spend time under your Vanagon.
