Hi all,
I got lots of suggestions as to what could be causing my power problems - in
June when I first posted, and this week. I also got a lot of suggestions
that I go to the Vanagon repair place in Ironwood, MI, which isn't too far
from Marquette.
I also got one referral to a VW owner (friend of a vanagonaut) here in
Marquette. I wasn't sure if Matilda wouldn't get much worse on route to
Ironwood, so I stopped by to talk to the Marquette person. She and her
partner, who owns a lovely 1966 VW pickup, sent me to their local mechanic,
Rex. He's not specifically a VW person, but he works on theirs.
Rex did a bunch of diagnostics and concluded that my pump was fine, the
whistle is coming from the new fuel filter, and my O2 sensor is bad. I'm
still in Marquette, staying with the VW owners (who are delightful, of
course), and waiting for the new O2 sensor to arrive tomorrow.
I was going to wait till it was installed and then let you all know it
turned out, but since you asked... I'll keep you posted and let you know if
the problem indeed turns out to have been just the O2 sensor.
Joy

:::i have to say, i was disappointed in most of the responses to your post.
:::
:::the only time i experienced a similar sounding problem with our '84
:::vanagon it was caused by a spark plug with its gap bridged by deposits,
:::perhaps debris resulting from recent use of injector/fuel system cleaner.
:::in any case, the van was essentially running on 3 cylinders, but a new
