That's a universal washer. You can hammer out some of the concave curvature
and it removes the slack without binding the CV or locking ring. They are as
mentioned not absolutely necessary but many old axles let the CVs slide on
the drive shaft mounting splines and that will eventually eat the drive
splines and render the axles useless.

I put like 2 hrs of sweat and tears installing that washer. but got it on.
