Hmmm! Starter live vs mileage between different vehicle depends on a
number of factors. Mostly short trips vs long trips. How well is the
engine been stay tuned. What condition is the battery during it's
lifetime. A poorly tuned engine and a weak battery is significantly
harder on the starter as it have to run for much longer. In worst
extremes requires a number of tries to start the engine.

I bought it new in 1990 and all 312,000+ are mine. It would have had
more but I when I moved from Monterey Calif to Newport RI in 91' I
rented a trailer to tow it on.

If you're getting 100k+ miles per starter, then I certainly can't argue
with you, that's all the reliability one could expect. (Wow, how many
miles are on your van, if you've put 312k on it just since you bought
it! Sounds like it's been a very reliable van for you all around.) Your
experience may not be typical though, from what I've seen/heard. I get
many customers who tell me of having gone through several mass-produced
aftermarket rebuilts in quick succession (and a couple on this list have
commented on it as well). The local VW repair shop has also commented
on it.
