That 'radiator' on the driver side of the engine bay is the 'charge air cooler' or intercooler from the 2003 Golf IV that the TDI came from. It is an air to air intercooler. The function of this is to cool the air off before it goes into the engine. When you compress air, it becomes hot. Hot air is less dense than cold air and doesn't hold as much fuel. To make the engine more efficient you have to cool down the compressed air before you burn it. Before the intercooler on good hill where you are making lots of boost the temps are 100 to 110C (above the boiling point of water). After the intercooler in the same hill it is around 65C - still pretty hot but this is within the parameters of what the TDI wants to see.

David, I know nothing about Diesel's (little enough about gas), the "radiator" left of the engine. Is that water?.. and in addition to the usual vanagon cooling? bob
