A helicoil would "Restore" it. A self tapping plug changes it and you're still not sure it would do the trick. At worst, you could mess up the hole where even an M14X1.5 helicoil would no longer work.

Years ago I bought a '58 cargo van (splittie) with cargo doors on both the driver's side and the passenger's side from a guy named Timothy Mudge. He would've used the self tapping plug. In fact, just about everywhere I looked on that old bus, things were different than standard ... a result of Mudge's imagineering. To this day, when I find a botched and jerry rigged repair, I call it a Mudge.
