To clean the wires use just a regular old rag and some cleaner like "green" or "orange" available at the local auto store.

The bentley is available in many places on line, like the list main site as well as many dealerships. The manual you want covers the vanagon from 1980 thru 1991.

As for stupid questions. That question was not stupid at all and shows that you are ready to take on the next challenges. The raw beginner that doesnΉt question that part is probably going to fry something or get very rude and shocking awakening (something that no pro would ever let happen,..well maybe a few). Starting at the battery and disconnecting the terminals and cleaning them is a good first step in anything electrical with the vehicle. Normal is to disconnect the ground side (-) first. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• jimt Planned insanity is best.
