Hello everyone.
I'm Chris Brooks in Virginia Beach, Va. I'm a 27 year old who owns his first
water cooled van, a 88 Vanagon GL, dove blue Vanagon. I have owned a 74
hightop westy, a 78 westfalia, and a 67 bus in the past, and have owned my current
van for about 2 years.
I had belonged to the type2 list for sometime, and now I am glad to know that
there is a similar Vanagon list!
I bought it with a nice dent in the sliding door (bummer), but the PO had
recently replaced the heads, radiator, waterpump, and had kept other maintenance
up to date..
This is the first water cooled car I have ever owned, so it has been an
adventure learning about the cooling system and Digifant F.I., all while not having
the layman's comfort of a Haynes manual to help with the Bentley:(
I'm still looking for a Dove Blue Sliding door (although I am sure it will
have a different shade), and have fixed little things here and there. Installed
some Antera 17" wheels, Ott. chip in the ECU, K&N, etc..
Right now I am just trying to figure out...
1) overheating/no radiator fan coming on thing (possible radiator blockage)
-switch checked, system bled, fan checked..radiator never gets that hot.
2) fluctuating idle (from 900-100 rpm, and it gets worse when I turn on the
headlights or wipers, and when I do use an electrical acc., you can hear a
oscillating whirl in syncopation with the idle fluctuation coming from the engine
compartment), i've checked for intake/exhaust leaks, and adjusted the timing.
It seems to subside to a +/- 25 rpm fluctuation when I disconnect the idle
stabilizer.. hmmm....
3) front end vibration from 25-45 mph( maybe the right wheel bearings) I've
had an alignment, balanced the wheels, checked the suspension..The right wheel
bearings were loose, so I repacked them and adjust the wheel.. and the
vibration seemed to go away for about 10 minutes or so..
All problems for another day, I have a bike ride to go on:)
Anyways, I'm glad to be on the list, and hope to contribute as much as I'll
get;)
Chris
