At one time I would have thought this 'Campsite Occupied' sign silly. We
often leave our site empty while off somewhere else. I've learned that
people think that a few chunks of firewood are theirs for the taking when
they think you're gone ---- indeed, I'll sometimes leave a few logs that
I don't want to carry for the next people. But, this summer my wife and I
pulled up to a campsite in Michigan in mid-afternoon, picked up a load of
firewood and dropped it at the campsite, and headed for the beach. We'd
bought 2 bundles, and they came loose (not bagged) so there was quite a
pile under the picnic table --- in case it rained. It was a nice day, so
we stayed at the beach until about 7pm --- when a huge storm blew up over
Lake Michigan. Serious winds and a torrential downpour, so I'm thinking
that my firewood, even under the picnic table is going to be soaked. When
we get back to the campsite this turns out to not be the problem ---- the
firewood isn't wet it's gone. Not a popsicle stick in sight. I'm idly
grumbling about this when a couple of guys from a few sites down come
rushing over, apologising profusley --- they had grabbed our wood,
thinking that we were gone. Not only grabbed it, but covered it in plastic
so it was still dry. So they toted back our nice dry firewood and everyone
was happy.
Cheers,

We just leave our folding chairs unfolded at a campsite, to mark it
"ours".
