Connecting outers solely as low beams and inners solely as high beams is stupid. Connect them as any other 4 headlight setup is connected and as VW did with the '86+ vans: outers - high/low beam; inners - high beam. If the gauge of the headlight wiring is the same in the '84 as in the '86 and newer vans, just daisy chain the hook-up for the new inner high beams. Changing the wiring to a monster size is a foolish waste of time and effort because the difference in voltage drop is calculable only if you use enough decimal places. A lighting relay will spare you the trouble of eventually replacing an overtaxed lighting switch, but contrary to a popular hallucination, it will not produce a palpable difference in the light output. Cleaning all the connections is the most effective improvement you can make to your lighting system. And, the inner headight connector is available almost anywhere. George |
