(sorry for the cross post.. but i'm doing this in about 4 hours) I have a 2wd van I've just completed my engine conversion and will be adding tranny fluid to TODAY. I purchased a valvoline synthetic blend 80-90 I believe was a GL5 rated, I was looking for a GL4 but all on the shelves were GL5 at my local FLAPS. I am also going to be doing my 87 Syncro (obligatory SVC) over the winter .. Will GL5 rated work in my 2wd or are all trannys deathly allergic to ANY GL% rated trans oil?..
From: "Don in North Carolina" <Don_Dixon@bellsouth.net> Subject: Al, I would recommend that you use the Redline MT-90 oil, rather than the Mobil 1 oil. The Mobil 1 oil is a GL-5 rated oil, and as such, is not suitable for the Vanagon transaxle. Mobil 1 was a GL-4 oil years ago, but no longer. I am using MT-90 (GL-4 rated) in my transaxle, and 75W-90 NS (GL-5 rated) in my front differential (you can run MT-90 in both the front and rear if you want, however). I ordered my oil through Advance Auto (FLAPS). For info on the process, try going to the "Been There, Done That" web page listed below. http://vw.upnorth.net/Changing_gearbox_oil101.htm Don in Reidsville, NC 1987 Vanagon GL Syncro - Will trade for a Westie or Weekender 2WD!! |
